HEAVEN AND EARTH

Our chosen image in 2007 for our brochure and website was voted in January 2008 as one of the finest images on the English Wikipedia website and Picture of the Day for January 1st 2008!
The image that is on our brochures has various names. It is called the Universum; Breakthrough; Meeting Point between Heaven and Earth; Flammarion Woodcut. The amended hand coloured section that we have used for our website was created by Hugo Heikenwaelder and Chameleon Media.
It is a wood engraving that was created around 1888. It first appeared in Camille Flammarion’s book L’atmosphere. The image may have been inspired by Sebastian Munster’s ‘Cosmographia’ of 1544.
The image shows a pilgrim finding the place between on the Earth where it is possible to breakthrough into the heavens. The wheels in the top right part of the image are the wheels (cycles?) of heaven as described in Ezekiel.
The image has been used many times to represent either the scientific or mystical quest for knowledge.
We chose this image as a symbol for the journey to find enlightenment, and, at some point that we become aware that it may be possible to find transformation into a higher realm, even if only for moments in our lives.
